How to Restore Your iPhone or iPad via Finder on a Mac Starting with macOS Catalina, Apple broke out the iTunes app and moved the iPhone and iPad management section to the Finder app. All the features are the same, they’re just in a different place.
To turn on Wi-Fi syncing, see Sync content between your Mac and iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi. In the Finder on your Mac, select the device in the Finder sidebar. Select General in the button bar. Click Restore Backup. Choose the backup you want to restore on the device from the Backup pop-up menu, then click Restore. A backup is a snapshot of the current state of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. When you restore a backup, you can: Restore your device to the state it was in when that backup was made. Transfer your data to a new device. You can restore backups with iCloud, iTunes, or iMazing. And rest assured; everything you had in your iTunes library is still accessible in each app. ICloud seamlessly syncs everything across your devices — or you can back up, restore, and sync by connecting the device directly to your Mac.
Restore your device from an iCloud backup
- Turn on your device. You should see a Hello screen. If you’ve already set up your device, you will need to erase all of its content before following these steps to restore from your backup.
- Follow the onscreen setup steps until you reach the Apps & Data screen, then tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID.
- Choose a backup. Look at the date and size of each backup and pick the most relevant one. After you've chosen a backup, the transfer will start. If a message states that a newer version of software is required, follow the onscreen steps to update. If you can't see the onscreen steps to help you update, find out what to do.
- When asked, sign in with your Apple ID to restore your apps and purchases. If you’ve purchased iTunes or App Store content using multiple Apple IDs, you’ll be asked to sign in to each one. If you can’t remember your password, you can tap Skip this Step and sign in later. But you won’t be able to use the apps until you’ve signed in with your Apple ID.
- Stay connected and wait for a progress bar to appear and for it to be completed. Depending on the size of the backup and the network speed, it may take anything from a few minutes to an hour for the progress bar to be completed. If you disconnect from Wi-Fi too soon, the progress will be paused until you reconnect.
- Now you can finish the setup process and enjoy using your device. Content such as your apps, photos, music and other information will continue to be restored in the background for the next few hours or days, depending on the amount of information there is. Try to connect regularly to Wi-Fi and power to enable the process to finish.
